Spatial Data Sciences Seminar - a retrospective of the sixth edition

On 3rd June, 2026, the sixth edition of Spatial Data Sciences took place at the Mining Building of Instituto Superior Técnico. In this seminar series, organized by Amílcar Soares, the attendees explored the interdisciplinary field of Spatial Data Sciences, which integrates traditional data science methods (including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence) with spatial analysis methodologies (including Geographic Information Systems, Geostatistics, and Remote Sensing). The seminar series featured eight speakers, divided into internal and external speakers.

The morning started with a Welcoming Session by Maria João Pereira, president of the Department of Mining and Engineering Resources, who highlighted the importance of the event in today’s digital world. It proceeded with presentations of work by different authors, including CERENA’s researchers Miguel Gomes, Amílcar Soares, Manuel Ribeiro, Helga Jordão, Faxin Zeng, and Leonardo Azevedo.

Amílcar Soares presented Miguel Gomes’ PhD work focused on the spatial characterization of drought areas. Helga Jordão focused on the importance of deep learning for mining exploration, while Fanxin Zeng demonstrated the applicability of spatial data sciences in seismic inversion.

The seminar series concluded with a lunch, where participants were able to connect in an informal setting. See you again next year!
