Researcher from ETH Zürich presents his research on nanoparticles and aerogels

Last June 18th, Markus Niederberger, a researcher at ETH Zürich (Switzerland) visited the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. In this occasion, he was invited to give an IST Distinguished Lecture, co-organized by CERENA and the Department of Chemical Engineering and titled “Wet Chemical Synthesis and Processing of Nanoparticles”. In his talk, Markus presented a list of projects that he has developed in material chemistry, more specifically on the synthesis of nanoparticles and aerogels. These materials have significant potential in corrosion protection and energy efficiency. Markus Niederberger, who is the founder of the Laboratory for Multifunctional Materials at ETH, emphasized the importance of “always keeping your eyes open” in the lab, where noticing "something different" can lead the research towards new, unexpected paths. He also highlighted that many scientific advancements have only been possible through collaboration with other institutions.

In an interview, Markus Niederberger spoke about his career and shared his view on the most important research topics in the field.
