In an interview with Negócios, Maria João Pereira, former Secretary of State for Energy, stated that Portugal has the potential to become a lithium supplier for Europe in the near future. She also mentioned upcoming developments on lithium refinery projects in the country.
Currently, Portugal has ongoing lithium mining projects and plans for the construction of an electric battery factory by the Chinese company CALB in Sines. However, there are still no clear prospects for the intermediate process of refining this mineral, known as white gold.
