Jubilation Lecture of Prof. Amílcar Soares: Warm Tributes and Heartfelt Memories

The Jubilee Lecture in honor of Prof. Amílcar was filled with gratitude, fond memories, and thoughtful reflections from esteemed colleagues. More than 150 people gathered in the Salão Nobre of Instituto Superior Técnico last September 30th to celebrate Prof. Amílcar Soares’ extraordinary career and contributions in the fields of geostatistics and natural resources. 

Prof. Rogério Colaço opened the event, acknowledging Prof. Amílcar’s significant contribution not only to the Department, but to the reputation of Instituto Superior Técnico itself. Next to speak was Prof. Antonio Costa e Silva, who gave a detailed account of Prof. Amílcar personal qualities, offering a picture of a man with a blend of intellect, humor, humility, and warmth. Following this, the Secretary of State for Energy Maria João Pereira paid tribute to Prof. Amílcar by speaking of their academic journeys, which coincided from the beginning of her career at Instituto Superior Técnico. Finally, Prof. Amílcar himself took the stage, delivering his highly anticipated lecture: he presented his work on mining and natural resources in simple, accessible terms, focusing on the human side of the academic profession. He concluded by expressing his heartfelt thanks to everyone present, acknowledging the significance of the event and the support of his colleagues and friends over the years.
