Geothermal Energy: A Stable and Continuous Resource with Minimal Environmental Footprint

A recent article published in Jornal SOL by Maria João Pereira and José Manuel Marques highlights the potential of geothermal energy in Portugal. Unlike solar or eolic energy, geothermal energy is a non-intermittent and inexhaustible supply of clean power, that is already contributing significantly to electricity generation in the Azores.

The article highlights the growing role of Portuguese research institutions, including Instituto Superior Técnico, in advancing geothermal technologies and training the next generation of experts. With increasing support from the European Union, geothermal energy could become a key player in Portugal's transition to a net-zero future.

Geothermal energy is not going to replace other renewable sources. However, in an energy system that demands technological diversification, supply security, and price stability, geothermal energy has a valuable role to play, and the two professors warn that this gift of nature should not be overlooked.
