Phytotechnology with biomass production applied for contaminated sites: Case-study from France and Case study from the Czech Republic by Karim Al Souki

Karim Al Souki: Currently Karim Al Souki is an assistant professor at the faculty of Environment in Jan Evangelista Purkyne University (UJEP) in Usti nad Labem (Czech Republic). The scope of research is mainly the soil/plant interactions in the context of the phytoremediation and enhancing the quality of contaminated and/or degraded soils, with the application of different plant models (miscanthus, quinoa, etc). PhD from the University of Lille 1 - Sciences and Technologies in France, while working in the Civil Engineering and geo-Environment (LGCgE) lab at ISA-Lille between 2014 and 2017.

Models of transport and fate of contaminants in the soil as tools for quantifying environmental risk by Maria Cristina Vila

Maria Cristina Vila (CERENA-FEUP): Maria Cristina Vila is an Associate Professor of the Department of Mining Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), where she has been teaching since 1992. Graduated in Mining Engineering in 1990 from the University of Porto. MSc in Technology and Management of Mineral Resources in 1995 by FEUP/IST. Concluded her Ph.D. in 2005 with the thesis "Soil rehabilitation observed through respirometry - signal analysis in biological systems", at FEUP. Responsible for the courses “Aquifer and Soil Rehabilitation”, “Quantitative environmental risk assessment”, in the Master in Environmental Engineering, “Control and Instrumentation” in the Mining Engineering Master, and “Sources, Transport and Modelling of Contaminants in the Soil”, in the Master in Soil Assessment and Remediation. Director of the Master in Mining and Geo-Environmental Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. Supervisor of 24 concluded master dissertations, and two concluded and one ongoing Ph.D. thesis. Integrated member of the Center for Natural Resources and Environment (CERENA). Her scientific research is focused on the main topics: rehabilitation of contaminated soils; bioremediation; monitoring and environmental risk analysis; technologies and waste management of the extractive industry (waste and drainage mining); mineral biotechnology; and mathematical modeling. She has participated in 25 funded research projects, including international projects with companies and projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Author of more than 80 publications in international scientific journals, in proceedings of international conferences, technical reports, and didactic publishing.
