Biography

Amílcar de Oliveira Soares is a Jubilee Professor of Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, having also worked as a Visitor Professor in institutions in the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Brazil. 

During the four decades of his academic career, he emerged as a reference in the development of modern geophysics and spacial data sciences, with applications in Earth Sciences, environmental studies and mineral and energetic resources. His scientific contribution was internationally recognized, being awarded the Distinguished Lecturer by the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG).

Recently, his work has been focusing on the use of these methodologies to solve environmental and societal challenges, including the geostatistical risk of infection by SARS-Cov2 in Portugal, and the spatial-temporal modelation of extreme dry periods in the south of the country. 

At Instituto Superior Técnico, Amílcar had a fundamental role in the promotion of research and development. He was at the forefront of the creation of CMRP – Center for Petroleum Reservoir Modeling, where he was president. Amílcar was co-founder of ROADS – Observation and Analysis Network for Desertification and Drought, and was one of the responsibles for the fusion of research centers in the field of geosciences, giving rise to CERENA – Center for Natural Resources and Environment, a research unite where he also worked as president.

In the pedagogical field, Amílcar was a major contributor to the development of new master and PhD programs. He promoted the dissemination of knowledge using digital tools, namely with the creation of the YouTube channel with his name, “Amílcar Soares”, where theoretical lessons of Geostatistics are available. 

His contribution to the scientific and academic landscapes are well-known, being author of numerous works that showcase the advancement of geostatistics and its applications.
