Last week, CERENA members participated in the Mostra UP, the University of Porto’s annual fair at the Pavilhão Muituisos in Gondomar, where thousands of secondary school students explore academic opportunities.
The fair brought together all faculties and research centers of the University of Porto, offering the young visitors a chance to discover the vast array of potential paths that can be “walked” when stepping into higher education — from sports and social sciences to engineering and music.
Many visitors were captivated by the CERENA and the Department of Civil and Georesources Engineering's stands, which were placed next to each other. Here, they engaged in interactive activities and discussions on the sustainable management of natural resources and their connection to everyday life. Whether it was students discovering something new like the curious link between a geological map and toothpaste, or parents who were concerned about the overwhelming academic choices for their children seeking a word of comfort and advise, the stands offered a warm and informative experience for all.
The fair highlights the importance of higher education not only as a means of acquiring skills and knowledge but also as a journey that shapes individuals and prepares them to contribute to society in a meaningful way. “It is important to participate to events like this” said a CERENA-FEUP member “It reminds us that the role of universities and educators goes beyond transmitting knowledge and it’s more about passing on values like responsibility, professionalism, and method.”
