Prof. Murat Karakus, from the University of Adelaide, will be visiting Instituto Superior Técnico and has been invited to give a seminar on "Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Rockburst; Insight into Class-II Behaviours of Hard Rocks in Compression and Tension"
As easily accessible mineral deposits become more limited, mining operations are forced to dig deeper into the Earth to meet increasing demand. However, deep mining comes with its own set of challenges, particularly the extreme pressures that can cause rockbursts at these depths. The semiar will explore the importance of Class-II behaviour in rockbursts and introduce numerical models for rockbursts simulations for an optimized management of deep mines.
Prof. Murat Karakus is Associate Professor at the School of School of Chemical Engineering of the University of Adelaide, where he founded the Cave Mining Research Centre to study cave mining challenges like rockbursts and rock support in high-temperature environments. He is also a member of multiple international committees related to rock mechanics, deep mining, and mine safety, and serves as an associate editor for two journals in the field.
