CERENA Seminar - October

hybrid: In Person at Técnico & Zoom |

On October 12 at 2 PM, we will have the following talks:

Mapping and modelling using remote sensing boarded in UAVs applied to surface mining by Rodrigo Peroni

c

Rodrigo Peroni is a Mining Engineer, graduated in 1994 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Master’s degree obtained in 1998 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Dr. Eng. obtained in 2002 on Resources Assessment and Mine Planning. Worked as Chief Mine Planning Engineer from 2003 to 2006 at Rio Paracatu Mineração gold mine (Large Open Pit Mine, initially part of Rio Tinto Group and then acquired by the Kinross Gold Corp.). Currently is a Full Professor at the Mining Engineering Department at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul working since 2006 to the present. Post Doctorate in Remote Sensing using UAVs in 2016. The expertise and research areas are related to Open Pit Mine Planning and Design, Resources/Reserves Assessment, Computing Aided Methods and Mining Software, Haul Roads Design, Virtual Reality and new techniques for topographic data acquisition, mapping and modelling.

Abstract: The size reduction of sensors and the growth of UAVs technology allowed to improve the data acquisition for several areas. Specifically, in mining, there are numerous applications that can improve the quality of the available data and/or speed up the routine tasks, reduce the exposure of workers to risky working environment and also allow to gather data in places of difficult access. In this short presentation some applications will be presented regarding topographic mapping to update the mining advance, diagnosing the current state of the mining surface for drainage purposes and to assess the geometrical aspects of haul roads and for geological and geotechnical mapping purposes.

CAVALI Project - Innovations in the Lithium Value Chain by António Fiúza

c

Emeritus Professor at the University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering. Former director of the Mining Eng. Department and of two Ph. D. Programs.  Coordinator of the research center CIGAR from 2003 until 2014. Scientific Coordinator of CERENA-FEUP between 2014 and 2021. Taught in universities of several countries. Coordination of 30 institutional projects.

Abstract: The CAVALI project's main objective is the production of lithium mineral concentrates, using the existing reserves in the concessions of the proponent company, with a view to making full use of the minerals contained in the ores (quartz, feldspars and possibly metallic minerals), thus leading to a process that does not generate solid waste (tailings). In this way, it is possible to achieve the two main objectives set forth in the main guiding principles of sustainable management in the exploitation of mineral resources: integral exploitation and no waste.
As a secondary objective, the project aims to develop, to the maximum extent considered possible and feasible, the value chain of the production cycle of lithium-based batteries for electric vehicles, thereby maximizing the added value resulting from the exploitation of national resources of this metal, Portugal being currently the country with the highest proven reserves of Li in the European continent.

The event will be in a hybrid format, In Person at IST and via Zoom.

Date/Location: October 12, 2022 (Wednesday), Room C13 (Central Pavilion - Alameda).
