Next Thursday, June 21st from 9-17h, the NEMATRANSFER Project Meeting INTERACTIONS BEHIND THE PINE WILT DISEASE, will be held at Auditorium CAP at INIAV Oeiras.
NEMATRANSFER is a project financed by the FCT, led by INIAV with a partnership of the Faculty of Sciences and the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon/CERENA, which deals with the pine wilt disease, which results from the activity of the Madeira Pine Nematode (NMP) that is killing the pines in Portugal. The main objectives of the ongoing NEMATRANSFER project are to decode the (most likely chemical) signals that the nematode uses to detect the insect vector among hundreds of insects from dozens of species inside the wood that allows it to escape from the dead pine trees and the stimuli to later leave the insect vector and penetrate the healthy pine. Their identification may allow the development of methodologies to interfere in the transfer of the nematode and thus to break the spread of the disease.
