CERENA is a centre from Instituto Superior Técnico that develops multidisciplinary R&D advanced activities in the areas of natural resources and the environment, for the modelling and management of natural resources, the beneficiation of raw materials and solid residues, geo-engineering, geotechnics, biomonitoring, environmental modelling and environmental remediation.

Researchers of CERENA-Centre for Natural Resources and Environment of IST collaborate with the research group of Uncertainty Quantification of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering Heriot Watt University led by Dr. Mike Christie and Dr. Vasily Demyanov.

In this context, Dr. Sara Focaccia and Leonardo Azevedo Pereira are in Edinburgh to strengthen the links between research centers and develop a new algorithm for History Matching conditioning to seismic reflection data, in order to reduce the uncertainty in modeling petroleum reservoir.

Focaccia Sara, who has a PhD in low enthalpy geothermal energy at the University of Bologna and the Instituto Superior Técnico, is currently working on History Matching geostatistical methods. Leonardo Azevedo, is a PhD student is investigating geostatistical inversion of seismic AVO and seismic inversion directly for petro-elastic models for seismic reservoir characterization and the rock physics models.

Researchers from CERENA will organize and participate in the next MASyS 7th Scientific meeting in Guadalajara (July 3 -5 , 2013), Mexico, involving research members of 11 Ibero-American countries. The theme for this conference is: Safety, health and environment. Click here to see the call.
