Paper Published: New generation of nitric oxide-releasing porous materials: Assessment of their potential to regulate biological functions

The paper New generation of nitric oxide-releasing porous materials: Assessment of their potential to regulate biological functions by R. V. Pinto, A. C. Fernandes, F. Antunes, Z. Lin, J. Rocha, J. Pires and M. L. Pinto was published in Nitric Oxide.

This work explores the potentiality of new nitric oxide donors based on porous materials (i.e. titanosilicates and clays) to control biological functions. Some nanoporous materials proved to be potential vehicles for NO with high storage capacity and, in this work, another essential parameters were evaluated in order to validate if these materials can be used in the therapeutic field, namely: their efficiency to release controlled NO, their biocompatibility and their stability in biological environments. Moreover, the potentiality of these new NO donors to regulate biological functions was assessed by controlling the mitochondrial respiration and the cell migration.

This work was important to select which materials can be used in the clinical practice (e.g. some materials reveal low stability and high toxicity), paving the way for further developments.
