Comment on Omira, Baptista and Matias (2015), “Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard in the Northeast Atlantic from Near- and Far-Field Tectonic Sources”(Article)

Pure and Applied Geophysics

Journal Article

Omira et al. (Pure and Applied Geophysics 172:901–920, 2015) assess the probabilistic tsunami hazard in the NE Atlantic. While recognizing the importance of this type of study for the prioritization of risk mitigation measures, I take consider the issue with the way the results are estimated and presented. I argue that the communication of the hazard is flawed, the analysis suffered from compounded conservatism, and no estimate of the associated uncertainties is provided. © 2016, Springer International Publishing.
