Currently working on the development of automated methodologies for pattern recognition on images of planetary surfaces. In particular, major effort is currently devoted to the study of Terrestrial analogs for better understanding Martian structures.

2014, January 07: The three global crater catalogues of the Moon (LU78287GT), Mars (MA132843GT) and Phobos (PH9224GT) have been converted into shapefiles and are now available at http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/search. This work was done in collaboration with Goran Salamuniccar and Trent Hare from the USGS Astrogeology Science Center.

2012, August 28: A new paper entitled "Advances in Automated Detection of Sand Dunes on Mars" was just accepted for publication in the journal Earth Surface Processes and Landforms.
2011, December 20: The PhD thesis entitled "Pattern Recognition Applied to the Study of Geomorphological Features in Planetary Images" was publicly defended today and passed with merit.
2011, September 06: A new paper entitled "Detection of Sub-Kilometer Craters in High Resolution Planetary Images Using Shape and Texture Features" will be presented soon in an international scientific journal. This work is yet another result of the collaboration established with Tomasz Stepinski from the University of Cincinnati and Wei Ding from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
2011, July 18: A new paper entitled "Subkilometer Crater Discovery with Boosting and Transfer Learning" was just published in an international scientific journal (available here). This work was performed in collaboration with a number of people from different universities across the United States of America: University of Massachusetts Boston; University of Cincinnati; University of Houston and University of Vermont.
2011, May 11: Lourenço Bandeira was distinguished with an Honorable Mention in a Young Researcher’s Award given by Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and Deloitte. The official ceremony will be held at Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, Lisbon, Portugal, on the 31st of May.
2011, March 18: The evaluating committee for the project TERPOLI has accepted the final report and congratulated the principal investigator Pedro Pina, and team.

2010, December 07: Two new publications have been accepted in international scientific journals this year. The work entitled "MA130301GT catalogue of Martian impact craters and advanced evaluation of crater detection algorithms using diverse topography and image datasets" is already available online here, and was done in collaboration with Goran Salamunićcar and Sven Lončarić from the University of Zagreb, Croatia.
