The 2nd International Multidisciplinary Conference on Mineral Waters: Genesis, Exploitation, Protection and Valorisation – MinWat2017 took place in Luso, Portugal, from 26 to 31 March 2017 (http://www.minwatportugal2017.org/). This International Conference was chaired by Professor José Manuel Marques, CERENA’s Researcher / IST, under the auspices of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) and the IAH Portuguese Chapter.

The International MinWat2017 Conference brought together 120 Delegates from 25 countries from Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia. This was an International Conference with an unusual format, as it brought together the three main strands of mineral and thermal waters: Hydrogeology (in the field of hydromineral resources characterization), Industry (in relation to bottling and storage) and Medical Hydrology (in its most varied aspects). The three major themes of this International Conference were:

  1. i) Hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry and hydrogeophysics – Origin, protection and management of mineral and thermal waters;
  2. ii) Bottled water: Key characteristics and market trends, and

iii) Mineral and thermal waters – Health issues, balneology, balneotherapy and balneothechnics,

There were 84 Abstracts, divided between 6 Keynotes, 46 Oral Communications and 32 Posters.

The Technical Visits, held midweek, were led by Portuguese Experts and addressed topics such as:

– Hydrogeology of the Aquifer System of Luso Mineral Waters;

– Sociedade de Água de Luso – Quinta do Cruzeiro – Bottling Plant and,

– The Luso Spa.

The support of the Luso Water Society was fundamental to the development and implementation of this International Conference, with the decentralization of this type of Event becoming increasingly vital. The support of the Tourism Center and Mealhada Municipality were also very important. The President of the Commission on Mineral and Thermal Waters of the International Association of Hydrogeologists CMTW-IAH (Dr. Ph.D. James W. LaMoreaux), the Secretary General of the European Federation of Bottled Waters EFBW (Dr. Ph.D Patricia Fosselard) and the President of the National / International Society of Medical Hydrology and Climatology SPHM / ISMH (Dr. Ph.D Pedro Cantista) were present at the Conference.
