Presentation of the book “Carvão de Aço” by photojournalist Adriano Miranda. May 7 at 12:30, FEUP Library

The Department of Mining Engineering and the Library of FEUP will promote, on May 7 (12.30), a presentation of the book “Carvão de Aço” by photojournalist Adriano Miranda.

In 1992, Adriano Miranda was a student at the Photography Course at AR.CO in Lisbon. Among many academic projects, Adriano gave his heart and soul to collect images at Minas do Pejão in Castelo de Paiva, a project that lasted until 1994, the year of the mining complex’s closure. After 25 years and in a surprising way, the thousands of black and white negatives have once again seen the daylight giving rise to the Book “Carvão de Aço”, a memorial to the men and women who worked in the Coal Mines of Pejão.

This presentation, which will take place in the FEUP Library and will be followed by the inauguration of a Temporary Exhibition with photographs of the Book in a symbolic space of Building F (Mines and Metallurgy), intends to be another opportunity to give voice to Comunidade Mineira do Pejão and perpetuate the memory of an activity that involved so many miners and for a long time at the service of society.

Fascínio da Fotografia: Adriano Miranda, Carvão de Aço, 2017
